Keith Keating
January 17th, 1956 - June 15th, 2013
Professional Engineer, Basketball & Baseball Manager, Husband, Father, Son, Brother and True Friend.
Keith Keating was a man of strength, passion and dedication. He loved the game of basketball, and more importantly he wanted to share that love with others through managing teams and providing athletes the opportunity to play. However, Keith didn’t just “manage”, he did everything possible to ensure that athletes had an opportunity to succeed at a high level (several of which played provincial and CIS level basketball) and to develop as young men. Keith was the type of man that would be at every basketball game and willing to contribute in any way he could, whether it was coaching, managing, scoring or running the door. He was a selfless man, who never coached or managed for personal benefit, always doing it as a volunteer and to mentor his players.
Keith was very well respected both on and off the court. He was well known in the basketball community since 2004 for his commitment to the Mount Pearl House and Club Program, St. Peter’s Junior High Program, O’Donel High School Program and NLBA Provincial Team Program. Keith provided the opportunity for athletes to develop. If an athlete wanted to get in the gym after practice or during a holiday, he would always be there. When athletes couldn’t get to practice, find a place to stay away, or simply understand why their shot was off, Keith was always there for them. Even after being diagnosed with Cancer in 2009, Keith did not give up coaching and helping others. He proceeded to coach for the next three years and saw much success. Over the course of his coaching/managing career, he was a part of over a dozen provincial championship teams and even won the prestigious “Patriot Pride Award” for his dedication to the O’Donel Athletic Program.
He was without a doubt, an integral part to the development of basketball in Newfoundland and was the type of person that makes basketball possible. For his contributions and the legacy that still lives on through the “Keith Keating Memorial Tournament”, Keith was and is a very instrumental part of the basketball lives of so many players today.
